Through my painting process, I am attempting to move ever deeper
into the mystery, past the words and labels that lay to rest the subject
at hand. This requires a multisensory approach, objective and non-objective,
conscious and unconscious attention simultaneously.
One can never become too well acquainted with the mystery of
life and with life forces. I am reminded of Rachel Carson's work and
my 'knowing'' that she had come to understand the wholeness of seemingly
fragmented systems of communities of living things. She saw these
communities were in fact seamless. She "'got it." And so she tried
to teach us how to honor and protect it.
Through my paintings, I am continually exploring how nature,
essential and primal, is a tuning fork for all life. I am in awe of
the primal rhythms and instinctual intelligence common to all life
forms. This is a VAST energy system period. I believe that, to the
extent that we turn our backs on the fundamental laws of nature we
will undermine life, as we know it, fall out of harmony and out of
communion with what sustains fife.
As an artist, this understanding is the foundation of everything
I do, whether a landscape, portrait or seascape. I must choose to
be open to life's energy, intrigued by its mystery and reassured by
its continuity.
I believe the "perfect artistic moment" is perhaps one where
self-consciousness and separation fall away. We are one with the creative
experience belonging to it in a sacred tryst. I hope my work will
move people into their own mystery and in taking a place in their
lives, will nudge them serve them and nourish them. |
